It’s still manic at Organic Pantry as summer unfolds with the multiple successional planting of the field crops demanding not only extensive planting activities but on-going sowing so that the harvest period of each crop is extended to its maximum, particularly for the crops that will stand and be available for harvest over the winter. Half a dozen different varieties of spouting broccoli are planted, for example, each with a different peak harvest period. The scale is impressive for a manual operation with the farm team working in and out of the warmth and humidity of the incubation sheds and then out in the open fields. The East Europeans have now left though with most salad crops in place, so Freddie, Jonnie and Fanny’s son, joins the planting team in the fields…….pet dog seems to enjoy being with him!
