A new Unlikely Heroes exhibition, bespoke to the location, will open at Harvest Farm Shop in Okehampton, Devon, on Thursday 5th October with a presentation on the project from yours truly. The exhibition will mark the revamping of the shop and a new proprietorial team in the form of the Harvest Workers’ Co-op.
Harvest Workers’ Co-op started its life as an idea when Martin and Sara, two local organic growers, decided to take on a small shop that was closing down in Okehampton. They saw this as an opportunity to increase access to organic food in the area and to raise awareness about the key role that farming plays in our health, the environment and the local economy. After two years trading and many months of planning, Martin, Sara and five others formed Harvest Workers’ Co-op to give the shop a strong sustainable management base from which to continue running the shop and using any surplus profit to run educational activities and local events on all things food and farming.
One of those founding co-op members, Kevin, contacted me via West Town Farm/organicARTS (Unlikely Heroes photo art trail opens here 30th September/1st October) with an invitation to post pictures in the shop following the shop’s physical overall after raising funds through a crowd funding appeal. All part of the realisation of Kevin and friends’ vision of a shop at the heart of community.
The exhibition opening will be start at 7 o’clock. My presentation will be around 40 minutes in length (and hopefully entertaining!!) and there will then be nibbles and drinks. Really looking forward to it, this is something different again! Click ‘exhibition‘ and ‘talk’ for more details
If you are in the Okehampton area on the 5th October do come along, would be wonderful to see you. The shop is at 5 Red Lion Yard, Okehampton (EX20 1AW), with more details on its activities and events at the shop website.
